The findings of the IMRB survey for The Times of India are sure to cast a shadow on the Centre’s decision on Telengana. For starters Delhi will be rattled. Sample this: 58% say Naxalites were good for their area, 60% don’t believe government claims on “encounters” with Naxals, 65% say killing of Naxals by government is unjustified and 62% say killings
by Naxals were justified. The government clearly is losing a battle it claims it has won. The survey was conducted in 5 districts in Telengana including Warangal. They raise disturbing questions about whether focusing largely on the policing aspects of the problem may be a flawed strategy in the long run. They also throw up another poser: Has the battle in AP truly been won or can the Maoists stage a comeback in a few years? These are questions Delhi will consider carefully when it examines the findings of the SKC panel.
