With floods ravaging several regions of Uttarakhand, senior BJP leader L K Advani on Monday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and sought a Rs 5,000-crore relief package for the state, a demand already made by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.

Advani also impressed upon the Prime Minister to rush a Central team to the BJP-ruled state to assess the damage.

Nishank has already written to the Prime Minister drawing his attention to the flood situation in the state. With the Chief Minister sending an SOS to the BJP leadership, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj too got in touch with Singh on Sunday to convey the severity of the situation.

Advani, accompanied by senior BJP leaders including S S Ahluwalia and Ravi Shankar Prasad, also urged the Prime Minister to direct the Central Water Commission to station a team of experts at the Tehri dam for monitoring the flood situation. The BJP leaders also wanted the Centre to provide all other assistance to the state to help it cope with the situation.

BJP spokesperson Tarun Vijay said the Centre should declare Uttarakhand as disaster-struck state. The main Opposition party wants the Centre to provide support to strengthen and reinforce the Border Roads Organisation, the Air Force to provide helicopters to the state to undertake relief efforts and continued assistance from Army, ITBP and the SSB.

The BJP leaders pointed out that massive landslides, flash floods and cloudburst in the last one month had resulted in the death of 150 people and damage to private and public properties to the tune of more than Rs 5,000 crore. While more than 1,000 roads were destroyed, transport and communication network in the sensitive border state has been disrupted.
