To reduce congestion on the roads in the fast growing port city, Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (Vuda) is planning to set up a suburban transport system (STS) on the lines of Hyderabad's Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS).

RITES Ltd, a Government of India enterprise under the aegis of the Indian Railways, has been asked to give a feasibility report on STS. Vuda vice-chairman Kona Sashidhar said they held a meeting with RITES officials and discussed the plans for the new suburban transport system.

Interacting with media persons here on Friday, he said RITES would submit the feasibility report in three months. Initially, the STS project has been planned to cover a distance of 28 km between the railway station (convent junction) to NTPC Simhadri in Parawada village to overcome the mounting traffic woes.

He said the cost of the project, land acquisition and other details would be formulated once the report was made available. An integrated master plan of Vuda would be formulated by including the newly-merged areas in Srikakulam and Tuni town of East Godavari districts, he said.
