Hundreds of college and school students cleaned the Juhu beach here on Thursday, after the Lord Ganesh idols were immersed in the sea by the devotees.

The students were joined by many Non-Government Organisations (NGO), politicians and actors in the cleaning drive.

The Ganesha Chaturthi festival culminated on Wednesday with devotees taking out idols in a grand procession for immersion in the Arabian Sea.

"Today, when we came in the morning, there were many idols on the beach, as well as garlands and flowers. So, we started cleaning them in association with United Mumbai," said Jai Krishna Patel, a college student.

"There are fifty students and since morning we are cleaning the beach," he added.

Bollywood actor Raza Murad, who also participated in the cleaning drive, said the students are doing a good job of cleaning the beach, which is one of Mumbai's most popular destinations.

"We also have some responsibility towards the city's cleanliness and I am so happy that all these students are so much aware of the need for cleanliness I am proud of them," said Murad. By Sushil Pareekh
